Certified Chimney Sweeping

When a certified chimney technician sweeps your chimney, their aim is to accomplish two main things:

1. To rid your chimney system of ash, debris, and flammable creosote;
2. To prepare the chimney for a proper, thorough chimney inspection, so that ash and creosote aren’t covering up potential hazards and preventing the technician from seeing or finding them.

For an average chimney sweeping, Guaranteed Chimney Service technicians will spend an hour to an hour and a half cleaning and inspecting various parts of the chimney, from the firebox and smoke shelf, all the way up to the top of the flue liner. With each sweeping, our technicians also inspect the interior and exterior of the chimney for damage, malfunctioning parts, and fire safety hazards.

As you prepare for your chimney sweeping visit, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Don’t use your fireplace for 24 hours+ before your appointment
  • If you have breakables or furniture within six or so feet of the fireplace and work area, it’s best to move those items to ensure that they don’t get in the way of the work, or get damaged
  • Once our technicians arrive, it’s best to have pets safely confined away from the work area

Different Appliances Produce Different Byproducts, But All Need Regular Maintenance

Wood-Burning Appliances
When wood burns, hot gases rise up in your chimney and meet the cooler flue walls, creating condensation. That condensation leads to creosote, a deposit that builds up on your flue walls and, as it builds, makes your flue less and less efficient, and less and less safe. Creosote is highly combustible, so it can lead to chimney fires, but it can also lead to a constricted flue. Regular sweeping ensures that your creosote deposits are safely removed, minimizing the chances of damage, fire, and inefficiency.

Pellet, Oil & Gas Appliances
Since pellet-burning appliances are still burning wood, there are some similarities between the upkeep required of these and of standard wood-burning appliances. But there are differences too, including the need to professionally clean the appliance itself so that damage doesn’t occur during the time when it’s not in use. The byproducts produced by oil and gas appliances are different from those produced by wood and pellet appliances, but the need for proper sweeping is the same, since oil and gas appliances will leave corrosive, acidic deposits on the flue that can cause it to deteriorate over time. Guaranteed Chimney Service technicians are trained in the proper practices of sweeping chimneys that vent all the different kinds of fuels, so whatever your fuel type, give us a call!

Glazed Creosote Removal
Under some circumstances, what’s referred to as “glazed creosote” can develop on the walls and liner of your chimney, and it requires a far more complicated cleaning process to remove. Our technicians are trained to properly remove glazed creosote, and can help you with tips and pointers that will help you prevent glazed creosote development in the future.
