The first thing a chimney sweep will do is determine if your firebox is the type that requires a half-inch combustible allowance or not. Once they determine that, they will begin the process of actually replacing the firebox. First, they will remove the front part of the fireplace to get to the rest of the firebox panels. They will then use a chisel or a screwdriver to remove all the panels. If you have a firebox that is ten years old or older, it may be difficult to find a replacement. Luckily there may be a newer model available that will fit. The sweep will help determine what model is appropriate if yours in unavailable.

The next steps involve mortaring the panels. The sweep will mix up some fire resistant cement to apply to the panels. They will apply at least an inch of this cement and probably create a masonry pattern on it. This may look rough initially but after a few uses it will retain its original used look.

It is incredibly important to allow trained professionals to perform this work. If any step is not done properly it can be a serious fire hazard to your house. No amount of money is worth risking the safety of your family. Replacing a firebox can be a daunting task, but when done by a certified professional you have nothing to worry about. You can rest assured that the project will be done safely, quickly, neatly and in the most cost effective way possible.
