What’s a Prefab Fireplace?

First off, let me tell you a little something about prefab fireplaces. These are otherwise known as manufactured or zero clearance fireplaces. Since the 1970’s there have been variations of this particular product. The first thing that came out was the metal prefab fireplace. Since then, its popularity increased basically because:

  • Easy to use, easy to install
  • Budget-friendly
  • Durable
  • Economical
  • Offers a variety of style
  • Safe placement anywhere

The Two Different Types

Over the years, the prefab fireplace evolved and developed into different types. Generally, there are two: wood-burning prefab fireplaces and gas-only prefab fireplaces. Each have their own unique differences but both are efficient in providing the kind of service for which you purchase it for, and that is to give supplemental heat to the home.

A wood-burning prefab fireplace has its set of pros and cons. An advantage of having this type of fireplace in your home is that it can give you the right amount of heat you need to endure the chilly winter days. On the downside, the installation price is relatively higher because of the need for constant stacking of wood and the need for an additional venting unit.

On the other hand, a gas-only prefab fireplace does not require installation of an additional venting unit. Instead, there is a gas line which allows a steady flow of gas to enter the chamber and burn, offering heat when it is most welcome. As opposed to burning real logs of wood, it’s decorated with artificial ceramic-made logs. It uses fuel, of course. Another benefit is that it can control the supply, the ignition process and the intensity of heat produced. So…no more buying and carrying in wood! You can push a button and have a fire on demand.
